I know it's been a minute, but we are out here doing the thing! We are absolutely thrilled and I'll just talk a little about the adventure so far.
We picked up our truck in the middle of August. Vince and Mel from our fleet, Hyfield, did a great job making sure everything was ready for us and explaining the things we needed to know. We checked in with our mentors and spent a bunch of time getting settled in. Peanut thought the whole adventure was great right from the start.
Speaking of dogs... where is Morgan??So, the plan was always to bring both dogs. Morgan is my boy and we have planned everything with him in mind. We also know that, while he loves traveling, other people and other dogs are not generally his favorite thing, so we had started him on calming probiotics and were planning accommodations to make him less stressed in situations that he might not enjoy.
My mom adopted an oversized, older lab a while before we were to leave and it occurred to me that since Morgan actually liked Miss Millie, having him around might help keep her active- he could be her fitness coach!
This plan is subject to change at any time, if any party wants it to. We miss him (a lot!) and he misses us, but Morgan also loves grandma and being on the farm, so that is the current situation.
There were still a few certifications that we needed to complete when we came out on the road, so our load options in the very beginning were a bit limited. As we checked the remaining boxes, more and more loads became available to us. Our very first load was a hazardous materials load, and since that time, we have hauled quite a variety of items. We have traveled from Delaware to California and many, many points in between (when I get my next video up, there will be a map!) We have been fortunate to have encountered little rain, and only light snow, so far.
How does this compare to driving a tractor-trailer?We both agree that driving a straight truck is a dream compared to a tractor-trailer! We fit so many more places, and driving in traffic is heaven, without a huge trailer in tow. The living space in this truck is a world away from what we have had previously.
The business of expediting is also so completely different from regular freight. We don't feel the need to escape and the pace of the lifestyle is much nicer. We frequently have weekends to ourselves to rest and relax. We have not yet taken advantage of the ability to stay in campgrounds, but plan to try that soon.
While we are still rather early in our journey, and really still getting acclimated, we were well-prepared for what to expect. This is honestly everything we had hoped for. We so missed traveling and regularly have to remind ourselves that we are getting paid to do what we love.
Does this mean we haven't faced frustrations and challenges? Of course not, but it is much easier to roll with them when you are in a good headspace.
I have a few ideas for other blog & vlog posts that I am working on, but please reach out with any specific questions or ideas!
Keep your eyes open for more updates and thanks for following along with us!
